A Bayside Secondary School student has earned Canada’s largest undergraduate scholarship to help make her transition to post-secondary education easier.
Flora Sonneveld has been selected to receive a $120,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship to study Engineering at McMaster University this fall.
Sonneveld was selected by teacher Erin Rose for her outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements, making history as the first nominee to win a Schulich Leader Scholarship at Bayside Secondary School.
“Being selected as a recipient of this scholarship is truly life-changing. It is difficult to describe the realization that such significant financial stress has been lifted for my family and I – it’s surreal,” Sonneveld stated.”
“This support will allow me to centre my focus on studying engineering, and my goals to contribute to the future of nuclear energy. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to join the community of Schulich Leaders at McMaster.”
HPEDSB officials say beyond her academic excellence, Sonneveld has left a lasting impact at Bayside Secondary School. She competed on six school sports teams, was a valued member of the yearbook committee and the Student Voice group, and dedicated her time to welcoming international students and guiding them through their transition to high school in Canada.
Sonneveld’s achievement serves as a ‘powerful example to the student body, demonstrating that dedication to academics, extracurriculars and the school community can truly shape their futures,’ school board officials added.
