An assault reported in Belleville Tuesday afternoon led to the arrest of a city man and injuries to one individual.
Around 4:15 p.m., city police received a report that a male had assaulted another resident by striking him in the leg with a hammer and spitting on him at an apartment building in the city’s west end.
During the incident, the male also reportedly smashed a window within the building. Following the incident, the suspect returned to his apartment unit.
Before 6 p.m., Belleville Police successfully negotiated with the suspect to exit his apartment unit, and officers took him into custody without further incident.
The victim was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
An investigation led to charges for a 33-year-old Belleville man of assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and mischief under $5000.
He was held for a bail hearing.
