Members of the Quinte West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating a two-vehicle collision that has resulted in one fatality.

On Sunday, March 1, 2026, at approximately 7:30 a.m., emergency crews responded to reports of a collision involving two passenger vehicles on the westbound lanes of Highway 401 near County Road 40.

A vehicle had become disabled while travelling on Highway 401 and stopped in a live lane due to a flat tire. A passenger exited the vehicle and was struck by a second vehicle. An 82-year-old male from Pembroke was transported to hospital and pronounced deceased.

The investigation remains ongoing with assistance from the OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (TIME) team. The westbound lanes of Highway 401 between County Road 30 and County Road 40 were closed for several hours and later reopened in the mid-afternoon.

Anyone with information or video footage of the incident is asked to contact Quinte West OPP at 1-888-310-1122, or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
