Beyond the Headlines – emergency responders communication and joint effort

As the saying goes, “teamwork makes the dream work”. It also saves lives.

As we thank our emergency responders following a day of crashes and chaos on the 401 through the region, let us also recognize the importance of how they communicate and work together effectively.

We had another perfect example Sunday night near Roslin.

Tweed Fire contacted the Belleville Fire Department to lead the water rescue of two people whose ATV became swamped in the Moira River around 8 pm.

The stakes were high, and by the time they got to them, they were suffering from extreme hypothermia and unable to move.

Belleville Fire Personnel then extracted them from the water, moved them one kilometer down the shore to the waiting care of the amazing personnel with Hastings Quinte Paramedics, who then rushed them to hospital (BGH).

It’s not just an incredible story of rapid and effective response and perseverance, it’s amazing teamwork.

It’s two fire departments working together to utilize resources effectively, coordinating location and approach, and then executing a timely handoff to medical personnel in a remote location.

We are so fortunate to have some of the most highly trained and effective emergency responders in all of Ontario watching over us in Quinte, and we are even more lucky that they work so effectively together.

I’m Paul Martin and that’s what I see looking Beyond the Headlines.
