OPP investigating death of inmate at Bath Institution

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating the death of an inmate at the Bath Institution, west of Kingston.

On Thursday, January 29, 2026, shortly before 10:00 a.m., an inmate was located in medical distress in his cell. He was transported to a local hospital and was later air-lifted to a trauma centre in Toronto. The individual, a 49-year-old male, was pronounced deceased on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

A postmortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

The OPP-led Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad is investigating the death, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch. Investigators are also working closely with the Office of the Chief Coroner, the Forensic Pathology Service and Correctional Service of Canada, with support from the OPP Forensic Identification Service.
