Prince Edward County OPP is reminding residents to stay vigilant as gift card scams continue to rise, especially during the holiday season.
Since last month, there have been 14 reported occurrences of fraud involving Prince Edward County residents, some of which included gift card fraud.
Scammers impersonate trusted sources such as government agencies, police, employers, or family members and claim urgent situations like unpaid taxes, bail for a loved one, or overdue bills.
Victims are instructed to buy gift cards and share the codes.
PEC OPP reminds residents that no legitimate organization will ever demand payment via gift cards and you should never share gift card numbers or passwords with anyone you don’t know.
If you receive a suspicious request, hang up or delete the message immediately.
If you believe you’ve been targeted or have fallen victim to a scam, report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or online at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca. You can also contact the Prince Edward County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
