It took the Trenton Golden Hawks 40 minutes to awake their offence, but when they did, they had a ninth straight victory.
Josh Penney snapped home the winner for his second of the game with 6:36 to go in the third period as part of a four-goal final frame to lift the Hawks over the Markham Royals 4-3 in a School Day Game at the Duncan McDonald Community Gardens on Tuesday afternoon.
Markham built a 2-0 lead through two periods on goals from Mason Cruzet and Josh Giordano before Trenton came flying back.
Kale Mace and Candon O’Neill (on the powerplay) struck within two minutes of each other to get the Hawks even before Penney slid home the go-ahead marker halfway through the period.
Not going away quietly, the Royals managed to pull themselves even on Giordano’s second of the contest before Penney’s heroics to cap off a three-point day.
Thomas Kuipers, the Hawks newly named captain, registered three helpers, including one on the game-winner.
Other assists went to Duncan Schneider, Daylen Moses, Jamie Darlison and Joey Brehmer.
Hayden Jeffery hung tough in making 29 saves.
The Hawks stay at home and will welcome the rival Haliburton County Huskies at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
