Wrapped in Courage flag raising in PEC recognizes survivors of gender-based violence

Recognizing survivors of gender-based violence was the intention of a flag-raising in Prince Edward County Tuesday.

Mayor Steve Ferguson was joined by representatives of Alternatives for Women and the Ontario Association of Interval & Transition Houses for a ceremony in recognition of the 2025 Wrapped in Courage campaign.

“This flag is more than a symbol – it is a public declaration of our community’s commitment to ending gender-based violence and supporting survivors with compassion, dignity, and action,” Mayor Ferguson remarked at the ceremony.

Executive Director of Alternatives for Women Julie Watson says it’s important to honour people whose lives have been taken by violence, but awareness is only one piece of the puzzle.

“We raise this flag as a promise—a promise to believe survivors, to challenge harmful attitudes and systems, to support women and gender-diverse people in our community, and to work together toward a future where safety is a right, for everyone,” she stated.

Later on Tuesday night, PEC Council declared November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
