UPDATE: QW crews clear scene of house fire near Trenton High School

By Kay Joly Apr 25, 2023 | 3:15 PM

Quinte West Firefighters have now cleared the scene of a stubborn house fire right across the street from Trenton High School.

Twenty-five Quinte West firefighters arrived shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday to put out the blaze at the century-old two-story residence at 2 Fourth Avenue — OPP and EMS were also at the scene along with crews from Hydro One and Enbridge.

One firefighter had been checked by EMS for heat exhaustion, while one of the residents was treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Quinte West Fire Chief John Whelan informed our newsroom that a school evacuation was considered earlier, but a change in wind direction prevented that from happening.

Students and faculty at Trenton High instead were placed in shelter-in-place, but that was lifted early in the afternoon.

It took several hours to brings things fully under control. The house is a complete write-off with damages estimated at 600 thousand dollars.

Fourth Street was closed until just after 3 pm, which is when firefighters finally cleared the scene.
