The Ontario government is set to remove speed cameras across the province.
This after Premier Doug Ford’s government passed legislation on Thursday to ban them.
Ford stated speed cameras don’t work to slow drivers down, though evidence collected by municipalities and Hospital for Sick Children researchers says otherwise, and believes measures such as speed bumps, roundabouts and signs with flashing lights are more effective.
However, Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria could not say when those measures would replace speed cameras.
For right now, there will be some temporary signage.
This will affect the City of Belleville, which has four cameras that rotate through Community Safety Zones in the city.
A Coun. Kathryn Brown motion that had been defeated at a council meeting two weeks ago sought collaboration between the province and the Ministry of Transportation, to undertake consultation with municipalities that operate ASE programs to develop improvements.
