Bay of Quinte MP Chris Malette clarifies response to Charlie Kirk Tribute in Parliament

By Hailey MacDonald Sep 17, 2025 | 4:45 PM

Bay of Quinte MP Chris Malette has shared his thoughts and spoken more about the tribute honouring right-wing U.S. activist Charlie Kirk earlier this week in Ottawa.

The House of Commons returned on Monday with respect for political differences front and centre.

The first session included a standing ovation which followed a tribute to Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated last week while speaking at a University in Utah.

After receiving several questions from constituents over the past couple of days, Malette released a statement clarifying his position.

He started by saying that he condemns all forms of political violence and harassment, adding “Violence is never the answer to any societal issue”.

He goes on to say that neither he, nor any Liberal MP, stood and applauded during the tribute.

He closed by saying that “violence, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and hate speech have no place in Canada.”

The full statement is included below.
