No decision yet on the future of Trenton’s Farmers Market at QW Council

It was a short meeting this afternoon at Quinte West Council.

The future of the Front Street Farmers’ Market in Trenton was the main topic of discussion.

Resident Elmar Heissler addressed council with a proposal to create a governing board for the market. He explained that after the city’s tender to operate the market received limited interest, a group of vendors formed an ad hoc committee and explored creating a non-profit organization to oversee its operations. However, they encountered challenges related to funding and legal requirements.

Heissler suggested a collaborative approach between the vendor group and the city, emphasizing the market’s value to the community.

In response, Jaclyn Grimmon, Director of Community Services & Strategic Partnerships for the City of Quinte West, said staff have been in discussions with the vendor group. She noted the city is open to exploring different operational models, including a joint management approach or continuing under city leadership.

No final decision was made by Council.
