Hospice Quinte offering practical caregiver training

By Hailey MacDonald Sep 18, 2025 | 1:22 PM

Hospice Quinte is proud to announce the upcoming round of Practical Caregiver Training. The course provides 5 weeks of practical training to make the caregiving experience safer and less stressful for you and the ones you are caring for.

This training is for caregivers caring for a loved one with a life limiting illness and the information presented is NOT diagnosis specific.

The courses will teach you what your role as a caregiver is, how to provide personal care, how to safely do lifts and transfers, what to expect at the end of life, self-care, and more.

“Taking care of a loved one with a life limiting illness is never easy,” said Hospice Quinte’s Community Hospice Manager Shelley Haggarty. “Our training gives caregivers the opportunity to learn how to provide care in a safe and healthy manner.”

According to the Ontario Caregivers Organization, our province is poised to face an unprecedented demand for access to primary, hospital, home, and long-term care, as well as community and social services. The expected population surge of those over the age of 65, along with the increase in people living with chronic illness, will place extraordinary pressure on family caregivers who provide 75% of the care in the healthcare system. The OCO also reports that 34% of caregivers provide more than 10 hours of care per week, and 73% report their caregiving responsibilities have increased over the past 2 years.

The training will take place on Tuesday, November 4, 11, 18, 25 and December 2 from 2:00pm – 4:00pm at the Stan Klemencic Care Centre, 1244 Old Hwy 2, Belleville.

Pre-registration is required. To register or for additional information please contact Shelley Haggarty at shelleyh@hospicequinte.ca or 613-966-6610 ext. 224 or visit Hospice Quinte Practical Caregiver Training – Fall 2025 | Hospice Quinte
