Take Back the Night rally and march in Belleville on September 25th

By Hailey MacDonald Sep 19, 2025 | 1:26 PM

An event that aims to support survivors and help end sexual violence will return to downtown Belleville next week.

The details are included in the following release from the Sexual Assault Centre for Quinte and District.

RELEASE – Belleville’s Take Back the Night event is fast approaching and we’re inviting community members who want to end sexual and gender-based violence to join us for this year’s event.

Take Back the Night is a rally and march that happens in Belleville and around the world with the goal to raise awareness, empower individuals, support survivors in their healing, and end sexual violence of all forms. It began in the 1970s in response to incidents of violence against women and was based on the premise that women should be able to go out at night and feel safe in the community without risk of violence, and that the responsibility for preventing violence is not to be placed on survivors of that violence. Today, the movement recognizes and embraces survivors of all gender identities and backgrounds from around the world.

This event will take place on Thursday, September 25th with the rally starting at 6pm at Market Square in Belleville, followed by a march in the streets surrounding the square. The march is for survivors, allies, and advocates to collectively walk together. The rally and march will be followed by a candlelight vigil representing our commitment to supporting survivors and our unity in working to end sexual violence, and a time to reflect and envision a safe place for everyone.

The 2025 Take Back the Night Committee is dedicated to elevating the voices of survivors in our community. This year, during the rally, we will be highlighting survivor stories through a special booklet that reflects a range of lived experiences. Survivors who wish to share their voices are warmly encouraged to take part.

Our theme this year is “Strength & Unity, Power & Community.” Together, we will form a Circle of Unity—creating a space where survivors can feel empowered, connected, and supported by one another.
