A perfect Hockey Fights Cancer Weekend was completed with a win over the Providence Bruins on Saturday for the Belleville Senators.
The B-Sens snapped the Bruins’ four-game winning streak while extending their own successful run to three straight contests.
The red-hot Kasper Halttunen opened the scoring when he was teed up for a one-timer on the powerplay that he blasted past Jiri Patera at the 13:51 mark.
Christian Kyrou distributed the pass and Phil Daoust also factored in with the secondary assist on the Finn’s team-leading 10th of the season.
Jackson Parsons was busy in the opening period, making 15 saves on as many Providence shots.
Providence wasted very little time striking in period two, with Dans Locmelis sticking a backdoor feed from Riley Duran inside the near post to even the score 42 seconds in.
Belleville got the rapid response it was looking for, when Blake Montgomery made a maneuver that pulled Patera out of his crease, leading to a tuck-in for his second of the year.
Ryan Suzuki and Djibril Toure added assists.
A creative passing play involving Xavier Bourgault and Eskild Bakke Olsen that led to a hard shot on goal that elicited a rebound right out to Tyler Boucher, who smacked home his fourth of the season at the 7:53 mark of the frame.
Locmelis was credited for his second of the game on a strange play where the puck was knocked out of the air by the Sens and in, but the team didn’t get too bothered and offered an even swifter punch back through a young prospect.
Luke Ellinas jumped on a loose puck immediately off the centre ice faceoff, shook off a check and went to the backhand to slide the disc through the legs of Patera for his second goal in as many nights, quickly restoring the two-goal bulge.
Belleville kept the foot on the gas pedal in the third, with Montgomery getting loose, wrapping the puck around the back of the Providence net and flicking a backhander off a pad and in for his second of the night, marking his first multi-goal AHL game to increase the Sens margin by one more notch.
Oskar Pettersson and Suzuki drew the helpers on the insurance marker.
The Sens secured the game with solid defence and more outstanding goaltending from Parsons, who finished with 31 saves.
The final shots favoured Providence 33-32 after a late surge by the visiting club.
The Sens break away from home for a trip to Utica, N.Y. to face the Comets at 6:05 p.m.
