That’s called life in the real world. So, what planet does Toronto Blue Jays All-Star first-baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. live on?
Nearing the completion of his most dismal season as a Major-Leaguer, Guerrero did a recent Spanish interview where he claimed his 14-year, $500 million contract signed in April 2025 with Toronto — making him the highest-paid Blue Jay in club history — is for the remarkable stats he piled up during the club’s thrilling run to last year’s World Series and before. Not for what he does now and beyond.
Say what?
That, I guess, explains his terrible numbers this year with jaw-dropping career-lows recorded in almost every offensive category. Including, with three games to go, less than 10 home runs — 10! — after swatting almost 50 dingers five years ago.
Junior’s abysmal stanza jumps out as one of the main reasons the Blue Jays, who came within a whisker of winning all the marbles last year, won’t even participate in the playoffs this year, let alone return to the World Series. Guerrero stunk the joint out and the club has paid the price. Big time.
Meanwhile, during his entire season-long slump, Guerrero continues to be coddled by the Toronto media. Some even tried to make lame excuses for his weird commentary regarding his contract. Get serious.
And why didn’t Blue Jays manager John Schneider, at some point, drop Junior to sixth or seventh in the batting order instead of continually keeping him near the top despite his season-long struggles at the plate? Not only would it have served as a wake-up call, but shaking up the batting order might’ve produced a few more desperately-needed runs too.
Meanwhile, after Guerrero’s idiotic comments, Toronto management might want to approach him this off-season and demand some cash back on his mega-buck deal. After all, if he is indeed getting paid for what he did, it’s clear what he did this season.
