An event that aims to support survivors and help end sexual violence will return to downtown Belleville on Thursday night.
The Take Back the Night event will begin at Market Square at 6 pm with the March to be held at 7 followed by a Candlelit Vigil at 7:30.
Take Back the Night is a rally and march that happens in Belleville and around the world with the goal to raise awareness, empower individuals, support survivors in their healing, and end sexual violence of all forms. It began in the 1970s in response to incidents of violence against women and was based on the premise that women should be able to go out at night and feel safe in the community without risk of violence, and that the responsibility for preventing violence is not to be placed on survivors of that violence. Today, the movement recognizes and embraces survivors of all gender identities and backgrounds from around the world.
