The Belleville Police Service has issued a statement thanking the public while also asking for privacy for the family of Constable Jeff Smith, who continues to recover in hospital after being injured in an exchange of gunfire near the Son’s of Jacob Synagogue.

Belleville Police Chief Murray Rodd is expected to address the media about the shooting on Thursday afternoon.
STATEMENT FROM BPS –
On behalf of the Belleville Police Service, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to the community for the overwhelming support, kind messages, thoughts, prayers, and well wishes received over the past several days.
The outpouring of compassion has been a tremendous source of strength and comfort for Constable Smith and his loved ones as he continues his recovery.
At this time, the family’s focus remains on Constable Smith’s healing. We respectfully ask that his privacy, and that of his family, be honoured as they navigate the road ahead. As such, the family will not be participating in media interviews or public engagements.
We thank everyone for their understanding.
