Over 1000 trees to be planted in Belleville & Kingston this weekend

Achieve your green thumb while supporting the improvement of local greenspace and biodiversity this weekend.
Events on Saturday will see more than 1,000 native trees and shrubs planted in Kingston and Belleville in support of TD Tree Days.
To mark 16 years of tree planting and revitalizing green spaces, TD Tree Days has an ambitious goal of planting 30,000 trees and shrubs in North America this year. Helping to make this possible are local community groups and volunteers of all ages in urban and rural areas across the province.

Events this weekend include:

Kingston
Lemoine Point Conservation Area
Sept. 26
9am – 12pm
Belleville
Brimley Court Greenspace Park
Sept. 26
9am – 12pm

The Belleville event is hosted in collaboration with the City of Belleville to enhance local diversity in the park by providing food and shelter for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife supporting long-term ecosystem restoration in the area. Increasing canopy cover will also improve environmental conditions for the surrounding community by reducing stormwater runoff, mitigating urban heat, and improving air quality.

The Kingston event is being hosted in collaboration with Cataraqui Conservation to restore a previously mown site into a high-quality habitat for forest wildlife. It will also help replace the urban canopy that has been lost to dead ash trees. This will help reach local carbon sequestration goals and provide cooling benefits within the city.

Carolyn Scotchmer, Executive Director of TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, will be able to speak to you about this key milestone, what it means for volunteers and community members, how you can get involved and more.
“Our goal to plant 30,000 trees and shrubs is ambitious, but I know we can achieve it, particularly thanks to the collaboration of several local organizations who are helping us bring events to life numerous in Eastern Ontario. We encourage everyone to come out, roll up your sleeves and help spruce up your local trail, park or green space,” Scotchmer said.
This year, TD is working together with 75 different organizations with the goal of adding to the more than 590,000 trees and shrubs that volunteers have already planted to date through TD Tree Days since 2010.
