Quinte Health, the Belleville General Hospital Foundation and the Belleville General Hospital Auxiliary are proud to celebrate the 140th anniversary of Belleville General Hospital (BGH), recognizing a legacy built through the generosity, volunteerism, and commitment of generations of community members.
One hundred and forty years ago today, the doors of BGH first opened, marking the beginning of a tradition that continues to define healthcare across our region: a community coming together to care for one another.
The story of BGH began long before its first patients arrived. In 1879, when there was no hospital between Kingston and Toronto, Harriet Lyon Jacques, wife of the Headmaster of Albert College, recognized the need for local hospital care. She brought together the women of Belleville to establish the Women’s Christian Association (W.C.A.), whose vision, determination, and leadership inspired an entire community to build something that would serve generations to come.
With support from the City of Belleville, Hastings County, local donors and countless community members, fundraising efforts led by the W.C.A. made that vision a reality. The cornerstone was laid on September 25, 1884, and on July 20, 1886, BGH officially opened with just eight beds and three nurses. The contract to build both the hospital and the adjoining Home for the Aged totaled $12,274, an extraordinary investment by a community determined to care for its own.
The hospital has changed dramatically over the past 140 years, growing from a small community hospital into a modern hospital providing a broad range of primary and secondary care, diagnostic services, and regional programs. Along the way, it has expanded its facilities, embraced new technologies and continually evolved to meet the changing needs of the communities it serves.
Yet one thing has remained remarkably consistent.
From the very beginning, BGH has belonged to its community, not simply as a place where care is delivered, but as a shared responsibility built through generosity, volunteerism, and a belief that healthcare should be available close to home.
“The story of Belleville General Hospital is really the story of our community,” said Stacey Daub, President and CEO, Quinte Health. “Our founders understood that quality healthcare doesn’t happen by accident. It takes people who are willing to step forward, contribute what they can and work together for something bigger than themselves. One hundred and forty years later, our community continues to embody that same spirit, shaping this hospital every day.”
That spirit is reflected in the work of two organizations whose roots are deeply intertwined with the hospital’s history.
The Belleville General Hospital Foundation continues the tradition of philanthropy that made the original hospital possible, funding equipment, technology and capital improvements that help ensure patients have access to exceptional care close to home.
“One of the most inspiring parts of Belleville General Hospital’s history is that it began with a community recognizing a need and coming together to meet it,” said Alec Bauer, Interim Executive Director, BGH Foundation. “That same spirit continues today because people understand that great healthcare is something we build together. Every donation helps carry forward a legacy that began 140 years ago.”
As part of the anniversary celebrations, the Belleville General Hospital Foundation will recognize the generosity of its donors at a special Donor Recognition event this evening.
Volunteerism also remains a defining part of the hospital’s story. Last year alone, the Belleville General Hospital Auxiliary’s 215 volunteers contributed more than 28,000 hours supporting patients, families, visitors, and hospital programs, continuing a tradition of service that stretches back to the hospital’s earliest days.
“Before there was a hospital, there were volunteers,” said Paul Reesor, President, BGH Auxiliary Board. “The women of the Women’s Christian Association saw an opportunity to improve healthcare in their community and inspired others to help build BGH from the ground up. It is a privilege for today’s Auxiliary volunteers to continue that extraordinary legacy of caring for our community.”
Over the past 140 years, countless individuals have shaped Belleville General Hospital’s story: patients and families, physicians, nurses, staff, volunteers, donors, community partners, and civic leaders. Together, they have helped create a hospital that has cared for generations of people through moments of joy, uncertainty, recovery, and loss.
As BGH celebrates this milestone, Quinte Health, the Belleville General Hospital Foundation, and the Belleville General Hospital Auxiliary extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has contributed to this remarkable legacy and to those who continue building the future of healthcare for generations to come.
