Beyond the Headlines – additions to the Belleville Cenotaph

A total of 30 names will soon be added to a location dedicated to remembering the sacrifice of those who gave their lives for our freedom.

Last night, Belleville Council approved a motion to submit a $10,000 application to the Commemorative Partnership Program through Veterans Affairs Canada.

Council also approved a recommendation amending the capital budget in the amount of $35,000 for the project, which will see the names of 30 previously unlisted soldiers added to the Cenotaph in Belleville.

Special thanks to Council, Staff, the Belleville Veterans Council and especially Dr. Don Brearley and the late Mr. Don Kellaway who spearheaded this project, which will see the names of 23 previously unlisted soldiers from World War I and seven from World War II added to the site.

As we gather each year to remember the fallen and thank former and current members of the military for their service, we must never forget the cost of freedom and the ultimate price paid by far too many of our brave soldiers.

Every death must be remembered. No soldier’s sacrifice should ever be diminished or forgotten.

History was written with the ink of their courage. The least we can do is making sure the authors’ names are property recorded on pages permanently stamped for all to see and properly honour.

I’m Paul Martin and that’s what I see looking beyond the Headlines.
