Belleville Police have laid several charges following an incident which began with a call about an impaired driver and ended with two assaults including one on an officer.
On May 22nd at 7:25 p.m., Belleville Police responded to a report of a suspected impaired driver in the city’s north end.
A complainant reported observing a male arrive in a parking lot appearing intoxicated. The complainant took the vehicle keys, and the male left on foot.
Through investigation, officers identified a male suspect and confirmed he was a prohibited driver. Officers attended his residence, where the male and a female were present. When officers attempted to arrest the male, he refused to comply and retreated inside.
A verbal dispute was then heard, and officers observed the male place his arm around the female’s neck. Officers intervened, at which point the male released the female and charged at an officer. The male was taken into custody.
As a result of investigation, a 42-year-old Belleville man, was arrested and charged with:
· Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code
· Dangerous operation
· Failure or refusal to comply with demand
· Take motor vehicle without consent
· Assault – Spousal
· Resist peace officer
· Assault a peace officer
He was held for a bail hearing. No name was released.
