A hat trick by former Belleville Bulls OHL forward Brett Gustavsen paced the Manotick Mariners to a 7-2 win over the Tweed Oil Kings in the fifth and deciding game of the Sentinel Cup finals.
The best-of-five championship series decided the Eastern Ontario champion of the Northern Premier Sr. A Hockey League. Game 5 was played last Saturday night before a capacity crowd at the Minto Recreation Complex in Barrhaven which included a busload of fans from Tweed.
MARINERS 7, OIL KINGS 2
A penalty-filled affair saw Western Conference champion Tweed score first (Isaac Brown) before the Eastern Conference champion Mariners opened the floodgates with six straight goals to put Manotick in control heading into the third period. Jakob Brahaney notched the other Oil Kings marker.
Manotick outshot Tweed 42-27 over 60 minutes with Evan Morrison making 35 saves in the Oil Kings cage.
Oil Kings were trying to win the Sentinel Cup on the 50th anniversary of the former Tweed BP Oil Kings capturing the 1976 all-Ontario Intermediate C title.
NEED TO KNOW: Elijah Brahaney led Tweed scorers with four goals in the five-game final.
