The Prince Edward County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding residents and visitors to make safety a priority as they enjoy the upcoming Civic Day long weekend.
As part of the annual Civic Day Long Weekend Traffic Safety Campaign, OPP officers will be conducting increased patrols from July 31 to August 3, 2026, focusing on the behaviors that continue to cause serious and fatal collisions on Ontario’s roads.
Motorists can expect enforcement targeting impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and seatbelt compliance. With increased traffic expected throughout Prince Edward County, drivers are encouraged to slow down, stay focused, and make responsible choices behind the wheel.
Distracted driving remains a leading cause of preventable collisions. Drivers are reminded that holding or using a handheld cellphone while driving is illegal in Ontario, even when stopped at a red light. A conviction can result in fines of up to $1,000, three demerit points, and a three-day licence suspension for a first offence.
The OPP is also reminding boaters and off-road vehicle users to operate safely and obey all applicable laws while enjoying the long weekend.
