The Wellington Dukes are inching closer toward being sold to a local buyer.
The local Ontario Junior Hockey League team announced on Tuesday that team owner Ken Clement has entered into a Letter of Intent with a Bay of Quinte businessman for the purchase of the franchise.
In a statement from the team, Clement said this step represents meaningful progress toward securing the long-term stability of the Dukes and maintaining the rich history of Junior A hockey in the community.
Clement expressed gratitude to Dukes Business Operations Manager and Community Liaison Chris Miles, who has played an integral role in acting as his local liaison with the purchaser while he is out of the country on business.
Miles added, “We appreciate the patience, understanding, and continued support of everyone involved as we work through this process. We hope to have league approval and this transaction complete by the end of May.”
Miles told Inquinte.ca in a message the name of the potential new owner cannot be revealed at this time due to pending league approval.
An update will be provided once the OJHL’s Board of Governors approves of the sale.
Clement had purchased the remaining share of the team from previous owner Michael Mulvihill in 2021 to become majority owner after a few years of partial ownership.
The Dukes continue to hold the longest playoff streak in Canadian Junior Hockey League history at 37 straight seasons.
