In the world of announcements, there is a big difference between cake and icing.
Yesterday, we received the latest in what has become the worst kept rumour in the history of the city, another tease for COSTCO in Belleville.
Mayor Neil Ellis gave a glowing State of the City Address to the Chamber of Commerce annual breakfast event, with many positive developments in the spotlight.
One of them was that an announcement was likely in the next few weeks about a 150,000+ square foot commercial/retail development on Bell Blvd.
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that probably means COSTCO (as has been discussed in rumours for years), but here’s a hot take.
The six magic letters are the icing, and not the cake.
Ellis’ address had many positive notes including overviews of a number of big projects on the horizon.
The big box build on Bell Blvd (say that five times fast) would be a major win, but that would be true no matter who does it.
Any such project means construction, taxes, options for consumers, and many jobs for local residents.
The store is the cake, COSTCO’s name would simply be the icing on top of it.
I’m Paul Martin and that’s what I see looking Beyond the Headlines.
