Huskies double Chiefs for Game 1 Divisional Final victory

A sensational showing from goaltender Liam Boyer was a big catalyst behind the Frankford Huskies’ ability to steal the first game of the Tod Division Final on Saturday night away from home.

Frankford doubled the Chiefs 4-2 in Lakefield in large part behind Boyer’s 42 saves.

Frankford jumped out to a 2-0 lead through the Avery Wease-Keegan Juchau connection.

Wease snuck one home at 7:45 from Juchau on the powerplay for his eighth of the postseason before the favour was returned with Juchau converting his fourth.

The Chiefs were confounded by the Huskies air-tight defence and goaltender Mason Boyer until the 11:25 mark of the second when Matthew D’Angelo cashed in to cut the Frankford lead.

Frankford didn’t let that blemish deter them, as it clamped down on things the rest of the period and found a way to jump back ahead by two on a Blake Ellis tally.

It was the Huskies powerplay that came through again at 3:26, with Stirling’s Ellis putting home his third of the playoffs from Ty McCambridge and Spencer Stanutz.

That goal stood as the winner, as the Huskies withstood a Ryan Bell marker and inserted an empty-netter from Jack Kuipers with 52 seconds left.

The Huskies won their 18th consecutive game dating back to mid-January and head home Monday for Game 2 with soaring confidence.
