One person has died and another was critically injured in a fatal house fire in Napanee over the weekend.

On Saturday, February 7th, shortly before 9:30pm, members of the L&A County OPP were called to the scene on Switzerville Road.

Napanee firefighters were already battling the fire and reported that people were potentially trapped in the house.

Two men, aged 59 and 34, were able to escape from the home. The 59-year-old man had jumped from a second-floor balcony to escape the smoke and flames. He was transported to hospital in critical condition. The 34-year-old was not seriously hurt.

A 65-year-old male was unaccounted for. All three men were residents of the home.

Human remains were later located inside the residence by firefighters.

A postmortem examination will be conducted to confirm the identity.

Firefighters remained on the scene overnight and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the blaze.
