The Belleville Senators go into the AHL All-Star Break having hit a bit of a rut.
The Sens dropped their fourth in their last five on ‘Bellevegas Night’ to the Syracuse Crunch 5-2 on Saturday night.
A busy offensive first period gave the fans lots to cheer about and react to.
An early penalty led to a quick powerplay strike from Conor Geekie to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead, before Lassi Thomson banged home a rebound that was juggled by Crunch goalie Brandon Halverson for his lucky 13th goal of the year.
Garrett Pilon and Jorian Donovan picked up the helpers on the marker.
Geekie then set up Jakob Pelletier for a quick snipe past Hunter Shepard below the blocker to help Syracuse retake the lead, but it lasted less time than the first lead.
42 seconds after Pelletier’s goal, Carter Yakemchuk picked off a Syracuse outlet pass cleanly, broke into the offensive zone and patiently outwaited the Crunch defence before wrapping the puck around and in for his seventh of the year and third in two games.
Belleville got some spark going in the second, with Landen Hookey answering the bell after a dangerous hit delivered by Tristan Allard to Keean Washkurak and dropping the gloves to fight.
The game remained even until the 15:57 mark of the second, when Gabriel Szturc parked a wrist shot short side on Shepard on another powerplay to get the Crunch back ahead again.
Belleville had its chances to get tied in the waning minutes but couldn’t beat Halverson and the Crunch nursed the one-goal advantage into the third.
The Sens continued surging in the final regulation frame, getting a few quality opportunities that were steered aside, setting the stage for the Crunch to finish the job.
Mitchell Chaffee scored a pair of insurance markers within the final four minutes of the third to stamp the second Crunch victory in as many nights versus Belleville.
The Sens now go into the AHL All-Star Break and will enjoy a week off to rest and cheer on North division representative Arthur Kaliyev before a Valentine’s Day bout with the Hershey Bears next Saturday at 7 p.m.
