Rinks not opening in Belleville, Batawa rinks continue to be in good condition

Residents of Belleville interested in strapping on their skates outdoors the rest of this winter will be out of luck.

The City posted on its social media channels on Tuesday that the outdoor rinks at Victoria Park and Zwick’s Park will not open this season due to poor ice conditions.

A layer of slush beneath the snow has affected the ice quality and city staff is unable to safely get equipment onto the surface to clear the snow and maintain the rinks.

“Our parks team has been regularly monitoring the ice, and despite the cold temperatures, the heavy snow cover continues to push water up through the ice, and conditions are not improving,” city officials stated.

Four rinks in Batawa are open for hockey and skating and have been reported in good condition by the Batawa Lions Club.

The rinks are available from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday
