By Brock Ormond Feb 2, 2026 | 4:21 PM

It will be a somber afternoon on Tuesday at 8 Wing CFB Trenton, as a repatriation ceremony welcomes home a Canadian soldier.

Gnr. Sebastian Halmagean, serving with the Canadian-led NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia under Operation REASSURANCE, died on January 29 at Camp Labrie near Riga.

The 4th Artillery Regiment gunner had nearly three years in the forces and worked in the Air Defence Battery.

The ceremony is expected to last from 2:30, when aircraft arrives, to 3 p.m., by which point a motorcade will take Halmagean’s body to Toronto via the Highway of Heroes.

The circumstances surrounding Gnr. Halmagean’s death are currently under investigation by the Canadian Forces Military Police with support from Latvian State Police.
