Two crashes close local stretch of eastbound 401 on Monday

By Paul Martin Jan 6, 2026 | 5:06 AM

It was a long and frustrating evening on the local stretch of the 401 between Belleville and Napanee on Monday.

The problems started in the late afternoon (just before 5 pm) when a multi-vehicle crash involving three tractor-trailers blocked the eastbound 401 approaching Centre Street in Napanee.

That resulted in a closure of the eastbound lanes for several hours for the cleanup, with the eastbound lanes only reopening at Deseronto Road around 11 pm.

There was a second major problem behind the scene of the first crash on the eastbound 401 around Mitchell Road at 6:30 pm.

A big-rig jack-knifed which led to secondary collisions.

One lane was reopened in that area 30 minutes later with the crash being completely cleared at 7:42 pm.

There were no major injuries in either of those crashes.
