UPDATE: Fatal collision on Hwy 401 near Big Apple

One individual has been pronounced deceased after a collision on Highway 401 in the Township of Cramahe.

On Saturday, January 3, 2026, at approximately 10:40 p.m., officers from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a collision involving two vehicles and a pedestrian on the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 near Cochrane Road.

It was reported that a pedestrian had been struck and a vehicle had been parked closed to the median in the westbound lanes.

As a result, a 22-year-old male from Chatham, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Highway 401 between Big Apple Drive and County Road 30 was closed for the investigation, with assistance from OPP Technical Collision Investigation (TCI) members. All lanes have since reopened as of approximately 5:00 a.m. on January 4.

Hwy 401 between Big Apple Dr and County Rd 30 in Colborne has re-opened.

The area was closed for several hours as a result of a motor vehicle collision.

One individual was pronounced deceased at the scene. Other details pertaining to the collision have not been shared. Updates will be provided when available.
