Motion approved to investigate activity on portion of Picton Terminals property

Picton Terminals is under scrutiny for possible illegal quarrying on a piece of its property.

The vast majority of Prince Edward County Council voted to approve a motion to have staff investigate activity on the Sophiasburgh portion of the port’s property on White Chapel Road.

The motion also asked that the provincial Ministry of Natural Resources explain why they believe Picton Terminals is not quarrying in this area.

There had been concerns about reported defiance of a 2018 judgment to cease activity at Picton Terminals.

The activity includes stockpiling aggregate and excavating pits.

Picton Terminals owners had previously noted any stone removed on the Sophiasburgh section was to make room for silos, a storage facility, access and storm water management.

Resident Bill Beckett had made a delegation prior to discussion and approval of the motion to show council photos of pits and heavy equipment associated with possible quarrying.
