The Kingston Police wish to inform the public about an on-going credit card scam, where business owners accept orders by phone, online or via email when a credit card is not present.
Scammers often use stolen or counterfeit card details to purchase products or services remotely. Fraud involving counterfeit cards may not be detected for several days, during which time the transaction is already completed, and the goods are often no longer recoverable.
When receiving orders remotely, Kingston Police would like to remind the public to be cautious and watch for:
– Large orders inconsistent with normal purchasing patterns
– Customers who refuse to provide verifiable identification
– Requests to use a courier or “friend” to pick up merchandise
– High-pressure tactics or urgent same day demands
– Multiple cards declined before one is approved
