Belleville Police Acting Sergeant recognized by province for bravery

A Belleville Police officer is being recognized for extraordinary bravery in a potentially life-threatening incident from last year.

Acting Sgt. Jeff Sarley is a recipient of a 2024 Ontario Medal for Police Bravery for his role in a dangerous driving case from September 21, 2024.

Sarley had responded to multiple reports of a cube truck driving dangerously through a Belleville neighbourhood, running into vehicles, yards and even a house.

Fearing for public safety, the province stated Sarley positioned his cruiser across the street to block the truck’s path.

As the truck accelerated toward him, he escaped on foot mere seconds before the truck violently collided with his cruiser, spinning it 15 metres and crushing its front end.

Despite the life-threatening situation, Sarley immediately returned to arrest the driver who was later charged with impaired and dangerous driving.

“Sarley’s decisive actions and disregard for his own safety prevented serious harm. His courage exemplifies the highest standards of police service,” the province stated in presenting the award.

This was part of Ontario Medals for Police and Firefighter Bravery, announced by the province on Monday.

The Ontario Medal for Police Bravery was created in 1975 and recognizes acts of extraordinary courage and bravery performed by members of Ontario’s police services.

The Ontario Medal for Firefighter Bravery was created in 1976 and honours firefighters who have gone above and beyond to protect and serve their communities.
