Police have closed a section of Highway 33 in Loyalist Township for the removal of a vehicle that drove into Lake Ontario last month.

Police said a vehicle left the roadway and entered the lake at County Road 6 and Highway 33 in Amherstview on the morning of Jan. 20.  The OPP’s Underwater Search and Recovery Unit later found a female driver deceased.

Lennox and Addington OPP Cst. Scott Woodburn said divers entered the water Friday morning to remove the vehicle which will be examined as part of the ongoing investigation.

He said foul play is not suspected in the incident however they expect to know more after they recover the vehicle which is considered “a key part of the investigation.”

Highway 33 at County Road 6 will be closed to traffic in both directions for four hours.

A detour route is set up at County Road 6 to Taylor Kidd Blvd to Jim Snow Road in both directions.  There is access for local residents from the west side of the closure only.
