The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Carey Smith-Dewey as incoming Director of Education.
Carey’s professional journey has been rooted in the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board from the very beginning. After graduating from Nicholson Catholic College, she continued her studies in education at the post-secondary level.
Carey has worked as an elementary and secondary teacher in the Hastings and Prince Edward area before coming a Vice-principal at St. Paul Catholic Secondary School in Trenton and Principal of St. Theresa Catholic Secondary School in Belleville. In 2020, Carey transitioned to the role of Superintendent of Education at the Board Office in Napanee. During her time as Superintendent of Education, Carey was a strong advocate for inclusive, and safe learning environments for all students.
“I am honoured to step into this leadership role and continue to support our Catholic learning communities,” said Smith-Dewey. “I will take this opportunity to lead with humility, gratitude, and a profound sense of purpose. I am driven by a mission to nurture a school system anchored in Gospel values, academic excellence, equity, and inclusion to ensure that every student is known, loved, and inspired to succeed.”
“It is with pleasure that we welcome Carey to the role of Director of Education,” said Brian Evoy, Chair of the Board. “This appointment is especially significant, as Carey is the first female Director in the history of our Board. Carey brings a wealth of knowledge in Catholic education and I know she will provide strong leadership to ensure the mission and vision of the board is embedded in all that we do.”
Director DeSantis announced his retirement in September and is set to retire on January 30th.
Carey Smith-Dewey will commence her role as Director of Education on February 2nd.
