The Trenton Golden Hawks have scratched across their first win of the young OJHL season with a total team effort on Tuesday night.
Hayden Jeffery’s 25-save shutout and Ethan Brassard’s two markers lifted the Hawks to a 4-0 victory at ‘The Hangar over the Toronto Warriors.
Brassard’s coupling began with a powerplay rebound goal off a stopped Beckett Ewart chance late in the first period with Bogdan Bogomolov out of position after the Hawks killed off a wave of penalties.
Then about five minutes or so into the second, Brassard launched a one-timer off a Toronto turnover to increase the lead.
New defenceman Niko Krmpotic, slotting into the blueline after a trade from his hometown Georgetown Raiders, floated a shot through heavy traffic and bulged the mesh for his first goal in his Hawks debut on another powerplay to make the score 3-0.
The Hawks shut it all down from there, getting an empty-netter from Charlie Gage and getting under the skin of Warriors players, playing on a five-minute major powerplay after a Toronto match penalty in a fight about eight minutes into the frame.
Ewart and Kale Mace picked up two assists each in the victory, with single helpers credited to Ryan Chamberlain, Kaiden Harmon, Krmpotic and Nathan McHattie as the Hawks volleyed 40 shots on the Toronto target.
The 1-3 Hawks get geared up for the always anticipated Battle of Quinte with the archrival Wellington Dukes at 7:30 p.m. Friday back at the Duncan McDonald Community Gardens, then what’s sure to be a fiery rematch against the Warriors at 5 p.m. Sunday.
