Hastings County Council is getting behind a request to the provincial Ministry of Infrastructure to double funding for local infrastructure beyond this year.
Council approved a special resolution from the Municipal Finance Officers’ Association of Ontario at its meeting Thursday.
The resolution states the Government of Ontario doubled the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund from $200M/year to $400M/year for 2021-2026 but has not publicly committed to maintaining this level of funding beyond 2026.
The County is joining the MFOA in encouraging the province to make the doubling of Ontario Community Infrastructure funding permanent in advance of the allocations for the 2027 calendar year.
This, they said, would help municipalities address critical infrastructure renewal needs faced by rural municipalities to continue building housing-enabling infrastructure while preserving the economic value provided by existing infrastructure.
