Belleville Council is providing additional support for a project which includes affordable housing.
At Monday’s meeting, Council approved a request under Programs 3, 4, and 15 of the CIP (Community Approvement Plan) for $197,000 for a rental building at 120 Burnham Street.
An application for this project was initially approved in 2022 for a lower amount, but a new application under the current CIP was received this year.
The proposed building would include 38 rental units, including twelve (12) affordable units, and eight (8) accessible units. The project is intended to be a low-rise, multi-unit dwelling.
A site plan has also been approved for the project.
Mayor Neil Ellis says it is a “win win” project for the city and its residents, as the CIP helps prioritize affordable housing for Belleville.
Staff said the $197,000 would utilize nearly 20% of the remaining CIP budget, while leaving approximately $793,000.00 for additional housing projects.
With this decision, substantial upfront funding will be provided to support this project while preserving some CIP funds to support additional housing developments.
As stated during the meeting, the new CIP meets Council’s priorities to build new affordable and accessible housing, revitalization of the downtown core, brownfield development, and overall community improvement.
The new CIP also makes it easier for people to apply to the program.
