Cobourg Police have announced that they have a K9 unit for the first time in 23-years.
The team of Constable Amrit Gill and Atos was unveiled last week at the Cobourg Police Service Board meeting.
Two weeks ago Constable Gil and the one-and-a-half-year-old German Shephard graduated from a training program led by Guelph Police. Other services from across Ontario were involved in the training, including Belleville Police.
Atos is from Poland and fulfills a dream for Constable Gill.
“As a kid, I was fascinated by police dogs. I still remember when [Retired Cobourg Police] Sergeant Don Missen and his K-9 partner visited my classroom. Seeing that connection between the officer, the dog, and the community left a lasting impression on me and played a big role in inspiring my decision to become a police officer. I would like to thank the Service and the Board for their support, and the community and trainers. It’s incredibly rewarding to now have the opportunity to help bring a canine unit back to Cobourg, enhance community safety, and hopefully inspire the next generation the same way I was inspired,” said Gil, in a statement.
Cobourg Police last had a Canine Unit from 1997 to 2003.
