Residents and visitors have a new mural to enjoy in downtown Belleville.
The Downtown Belleville Business Improvement Area (DBIA) has unveiled a new mural at 276 Front Street, at the back of the Becker Shoes building. The mural is by local Anishinaabe artist Angela Wiggins, who is based in Quinte.
“I create from a place where two worlds meet. One is carried in my Indigenous blood. The other in the land and families that raised me. This is called Two-Eyed Seeing, and it is the form I paint in. This piece is called ‘Where Journeys Meet’ and it is inspired by this land, the riverfront, how our ancestors used it and how people today still use it,” said Wiggins, in a statement provided by the DBIA.
The DBIA has been able to access a grant through the Rural Ontario Development Program to support the mural projects. The first mural was unveiled earlier this year. The work was a mosaic piece that was done alongside the Quinte Arts Council.
Another three murals are being planned for this year, with the next one at Barber’s Flowers.
