The Trenton Golden Hawks grinded out a second victory in as many games Saturday afternoon, needing extra time to do it in Minden.
Jamie Darlison was the offensive catalyst in the late goings, jamming in a powerplay goal with four minutes left in the third period, then buried the winner in double overtime on a breakaway to give Trenton a 3-2 win over the Haliburton County Huskies.
The Hawks outshot Haliburton 15-9 in the first, but couldn’t pierce the armour of Huskies goalie Carter Nadon, which paid off for the hosts early in the second frame.
Around five minutes into the middle stanza, Julius Da Silva scored his second goal in as many contests versus Trenton to lift the Huskies into the lead.
Beckett Ewart equaled the score by beating Nadon in close off a play by Joey Brehmer to strongarm the puck toward the net for his fifth of the year.
The tight affair continued into the third, with the Huskies catching a break on the powerplay at 7:23 on a Kieran Raynor goal, before Darlison took over.
Darlison shoveled home a pass out in front following a setup by Jaxon Pierce and Jack Ziliotto in the dying seconds of a man advantage to knot the score at two and drag the game to overtime.
Haliburton controlled the shots in the first overtime session, but couldn’t capitalize, cueing Darlison’s winner, sneaking past a couple of Huskies defenders and sticking a shot under Nadon for the unassisted decider, his sixth of the season.
Hayden Jeffery made 32 stops as Trenton outshot the Huskies 42-34 to improve to 9-2 on the season.
The Hawks are idle until a huge rematch of last season’s Buckland Cup Final versus the Milton Menace at 7:30 p.m. Friday at ‘The Hangar.’
