A late-night traffic stop in Prince Edward County has resulted in a drug charge for a Belleville resident.
On Saturday, June 20, 2026, shortly before midnight, an officer with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Prince Edward County Detachment conducted a traffic stop on County Road 1 after an Automated Licence Plate Reader (ALPR) alert indicated the registered owner of the vehicle was a suspended driver.
During the investigation, officers confirmed the driver was operating a motor vehicle while under suspension. The driver also displayed signs consistent with impairment.
The driver was arrested and transported to the detachment for further testing. A Drug Recognition Evaluation (DRE) was conducted, which determined the driver was impaired by a drug.
Officers also located and seized a quantity of a suspected Schedule I substance during the investigation.
As a result:
Christy FRY, age 33 of Belleville, has been charged with:
- Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine
Joel MATHLIN, age 44 of Marysville, has been charged with:
- Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
- Driving while under suspension
The OPP continues to utilize Automated Licence Plate Reader (ALPR) technology as part of proactive enforcement efforts to identify suspended drivers and enhance public safety.
Impaired driving, whether by alcohol or drugs, remains a serious risk to road users. Enforcement efforts will continue throughout the region.
