A Prince Edward County woman will be facing additional time behind bars in several fraud cases.
Jennifer Simao was handed a 42-month or three-and-a-half-year sentence by Justice Robert Horton at the Quinte Consolidated Courthouse this week for fraud at almost $800,000.
Victims included her employers, Impacto Protective Products, the Station Arts Collective/Theatre Roulant, and her mother.
She was initially charged in 2023 in connection with various thefts from her employers, before being additionally charged with fraud over $5,000 and using a forged document after stealing around $71,000 from her mother.
The judge’s sentence exceeded the terms recommended by both the defence (24 months) and the Crown (30 months), but Simao was given credit for time served pre-sentence at the Quinte Detention Centre.
The reasoning for the sentence from Justice Horton largely stemmed from the mental pain and suffering levied on the victims of Simao’s actions.
She was also put on strict conditions, including being handed a ‘free-standing’ restitution order, designed to save the victims from obtaining a civil judgement.
Hastings County Assistant Crown Attorney Paul Layefsky stated the length of the sentence has ruled out any type of probation.
