Belleville’s most experienced city councillor is once again throwing his hat into the ring.
Garnet Thompson will be seeking another council term at City Hall in this fall’s municipal election.
A statement from his campaign team says his future focus will be on city growth and expansion, along with expanding outdoor green spaces and walking trails.
“I love this community and I understand it as well as anyone,” he stated.
Thompson aims to continue advocating for affordable housing through his policy of including rental apartment blocks in mixed housing to maintain accommodation diversity within the city.
Thompson was first elected in 2006 and has served five terms on city council, making him Belleville’s most experienced current councillor by far.
He says he prides himself on being accessible to all citizens whose feedback he always welcomes and providing open communication with all constituents.
Thompson has lived in Belleville since 1974 where he and his wife Grace have raised four children in their east end home not far from Eastminster United Church of which he is a member. Work-wise, Garnet enjoyed a successful career in retail marketing.
Garnet has served on just about every City Hall committee, but his pride and joy has been resurrecting the storied Foster’s Christmas Display. It has expanded into a spectacular Christmas Winter Wonderland, renamed as The Festival of Lights, and is now located at Jane Forrester Park where if draws thousands of people, young and old, throughout the holiday season.
Election day is October 26.
