Retired judge receives first Honorary Chief of Police title

Members of the Belleville Police Service welcomed The Honourable Stephen Hunter (Retired) as the Service’s first Honorary Chief of Police during an investiture ceremony on Friday.

The ceremony, held at the Belleville Police Station, coincides with the Service’s 190th anniversary, celebrating nearly two centuries of dedication and service to the Quinte region.

Justice Hunter, a long-respected figure within the Belleville Police Service, has administered the oath of office to countless members over the years. His appointment as Honorary Chief of Police recognizes his lasting contributions and deep connection to the Service.

The role is ceremonial and advisory, supporting the Service in community engagement and upholding traditions.

Former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario Elizabeth Dowdeswell presided over the ceremony, which honored the Service’s past, celebrated its present, and inspired the next generation of officers.

Justic Hunter stated he was truly honoured to receive this honour.

“This appointment allows me to continue supporting an organization that has dedicated itself to the safety and well-being of our community for nearly 200 years. I look forward to engaging with the members and helping uphold the traditions and values that make this Service so exceptional,” Hunter expressed.

“We are proud to welcome Justice Stephen Hunter as our first Honorary Chief of Police,” stated Belleville Police Chief Murray Rodd.

“His decades of support and guidance have had a lasting impact on our Service. Justice Hunter’s leadership, integrity, and commitment to the community exemplify the ideals we strive for at the Belleville Police Service, and we know he will continue to inspire our members for years to come.”
