The Quinte West Fire Prevention Officers will be conducting business licensing inspections over the next several months to help ensure local businesses are safe, compliant and prepared in the event of a fire.
These inspections are part of the City’s ongoing commitment to public safety and are intended to ensure that businesses’ fire protection systems, exits and emergency procedures meet the Ontario Fire Code and safety standards. Quinte West Fire Prevention Officers will be visiting daycares, liquor-licensed establishments, restaurants, retail businesses and other types during their inspection process
During inspections, Fire Prevention Officers will look for: If applicable
- Inspect, test and maintain sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, emergency lighting, and exit lighting
- Portable fire extinguishers must always be operational and fully charged
- Fire and life safety systems should always be easily accessible and unobstructed
- An annual contractors’ service records onsite
- Commercial kitchen inspection reports
- Fire safety plans
- Blocked exits
- General overall safety of the establishment
“Regular inspections play an important role in preventing emergencies and protecting employees, customers and your business property,” says David Wheeler, Senior Fire Prevention Officer. “The goal is to work alongside businesses to ensure their space is safe and ready if an emergency occurs.”
Fire Prevention Officers may visit businesses during regular operating hours to conduct inspections and support fire safety preparedness. As these inspections are part of ongoing licensing and compliance efforts, advance scheduling is not always possible. Business owners are reminded that an inspection fee applies, with costs varying by business type, typically ranging from $90 to $200.
