The Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte hosted a ribbon cutting last Friday to celebrate new opportunities in its area.
Chief R. Don Maracle and other MBQ members marked the opening of five new roads in the community, which includes extensions to Homeland Drive and Hickory Lane, as well as the opening of three right of ways now called Orchard Lane, Whitetail Lane, and Muskrat Lane.
The roads will offer community members the opportunity to build homes, and aid in greater connectivity to the water service system.
The project was made possible by available funds and the hard work of the Infrastructure Department, Roads Department, Water Department, Monument Group, and Fidelity Engineering and Construction Inc.
MBQ officials also say the project also brought attention to the presence of apple and pear trees of community importance.
Three trees had to be removed within the right of ways, so the Environmental Supervisor collected seeds from them and produced some successful seedlings to replace the trees in the near future.
